Baffin Ice Bear Winter Boots - Feature Friday

Welcome back to Feature Friday, MacMor's deep dive into the various products we carry (or those you request to hear about). This week we're exploring the Canadian company Baffin and their Ice Bear Boots. One of the best features of these boots is that they are designed around comfort without compromising warmth or safety.

Designed for Canadian Winters

The wide fitting calf and foot allows its user to sneak in extra layers to an already well-insulated boot. As a winter boot, the Ice Bears are built with the harshest weather conditions in mind. In dissecting the various layers of the boot, you can see that there are many components that work together to achieve this.

Additionally, the Baffin Ice Bears feature a CSA Grade 1 metal-free safety toe and plate (STP). This STP protects against impact, compression, punctures, and a breadth of other hazards that can often lead to foot injuries

Outer Shell and STP

First, we will look at the green outer shell that makes up the casing of the boot. Made of a lightweight polyurethane (PU), the shell offers an abrasion-resistant, crack-resistant, and water-resistant casing to keep the elements out. A great boot starts with a great outer shell and this boot is a prime example of that. With added ankle and calf flexibility, the Baffin Ice Bear is designed with pliability in mind to minimize its usage limitations

Outsole

On the bottom of these Baffin boots is a rubber sole that is acid and oil resistant while the added lug sole beneath provides traction for added safety. These boots are the perfect fit for anyone working in industries where oil and acid are present. However, they are also applicable in work environments where added traction is needed. Combined with the white-metal free safety toe and plate for CSA Grade 1 protection, these boots are equal parts protection and warmth.

Safety Ratings

The Baffin Ice Bears feature the CSA White Rectangle with an Orange Ω (Omega) symbol which indicates the sole provides resistance to electrical shock. This standard indicates that this boot provides resistance to electric shock of up to 18,000 volts. Users can rest assured they are covered in even the most dangerous situations where electrostatic discharge (ESD) footwear is needed.

It is important to note that ESD footwear is only part of a system of tools needed to keep employees safe where electrostatic hazards are present. For more information on ESD safety check out this article.

Innovative Insulation

One of the more important layers for insulation is the Orange GelFlex PU midsole. While it looks like just another layer of the boot, that is far from reality. The GelFlex Pu midsole is injected and agitated with air which creates a pocket of air used to provide comfort while insulating the boot.

All around, the Baffin Ice Bear boots live up to the expectation of a product made to battle Canadian weather. From top to bottom the Ice Bears provide essential features needed for wet, slippery, and cold job sites, making them essential for crews working outside in the elements.
